Same problem all the time, people love driving them till you can’t any more.
Common problem, failed input shaft main shaft needle roller and 3 x 4 slider assembly.
And for the really lazy driver, 5th gear failure as a direct result of labouring or low speed in fifth gear.

GM 4HP16 ZF type gearbox.

Korean bearings, not same quality as we're used to. 4HP16 3

The idler gear bearing collapse let metal reach the pump, smashed the pump, which brought this to my bench.

3 of the bearings unobtainable in Australia, trying Europe.

It's still on the bench, if the bearings dont arrive soon, it all goes in a bucket.

Summary: if one of these comes by - the parts will be difficult to get so the potential for this vehicle to clog up a hoist for days is high.

 

 

Holden VE 5-speed automatic transmissions are affected because of the valve body wear.

VEboxSmThis one's done.

You need to modify the valve body when rebuilding one of these.

Do machining / resleeving of the valve body and overhaul the torque converter, remember to blow out the radiator lines too.

The valve body wear is quite rapid, leading to box failures because of it.

If you love warranty work, ignore this rule, it will sure be back on your hoist real quick.

Do the valve body mods and feel the love!
